SUMMARY:Future City Showcase
DESCRIPTION:Future City Experience is a transformative program that provides equitable access to Canadian students in grades 6 to 8\, challenging them to design and build sustainable cities of the future. The program ensures that every class that registers is matched with an engineer mentor\, creating opportunities for diverse perspectives and experiences to be included in the learning process. \nThe 2023 program\, “Waste-free future”\, reached almost 4000 students\, who were supported by close to 200 engineer mentors from diverse backgrounds across the country. This approach fosters inclusion and diversity\, helping students see themselves represented in the engineering profession. \nThe program culminates on May 10th (EN) / May 11th (FR) with a virtual Showcase where students can present their cities to a panel of engineers. Future City Experience offers an adaptable and engaging learning experience that sparks curiosity and creativity in all students\, promoting equitable access to STEM education. \nEveryone’s welcome! \nRSVP ==>

SUMMARY:Where is the E in STEM: Why engineering is underrepresented in K-12 classrooms.
DESCRIPTION:Science\, technology\, engineering\, and mathematics (STEM) teaching in the Canadian K-12 school system has increasingly become a priority for Canada’s federal and provincial governments. Despite this\, the literature shows that Canada is lagging the top five innovator countries in STEM innovation. \nThe presence of engineering as part of STEM in the classroom varies widely. Overall\, engineering appears to be under-represented or unidentified in the K-12 classroom. Ultimately\, engineering is lost in ‘STEM’ in the K-12 space – many educators do not have a clear understanding of what engineering is. \nAlthough we know that engineering is being taught in the classroom\, students with a growing passion for engineering may not consider engineering as a path simply because it is not named or well-defined in the K-12 space. \nJoin us for this virtual event March 30th as Engineers Canada & MQO Research present their findings from their comprehensive literature and best practices review\, jurisdictional scan\, online survey and key-informant interviews and an analysis of enrolment data across Canada. \nSpeakers: \nBrenden Sommerhalder\, Vice President Client Development & Innovation\, MQO Research\nKim Bouffard\, Manager Belonging and Engagement\, Engineers Canada\nRebecca White\, CEO Engineers of Tomorrow

SUMMARY:Future City Experience Showcase
DESCRIPTION:Over 2500 students in grade 6-8 from across Canada have signed up to participate in the Future City Experience this year. The objective of the Future City program is to inspire youths’ interest in engineering via a hands-on project-based learning program that is integrated into the middle school curriculum. Grade 6 to 8 students create cities that exist at least 100 years in the future by applying the engineering design process and specific project management methods. Students’ work is overseen by an educator and STEM mentor to meet project deliverables that include experimenting with city design\,  researching and designing a solution to a city-wide issue and building a scale model of their city using recycled materials. \nThis year\, students will present their Future City models during an online National Showcase event May 11th\, 2022. \nThis invitation is extended to educators from across Canada to invite more youth to learn about the science and engineering involved in designing and building a Future City model and raise awareness about the program. \nParticipating students will present their Future City models to a panel of engineering experts and receive live feedback. This virtual event will also include opportunities for all students and educators to learn from industry experts\, explore interactive STEM outreach tools\, and connect with others through interactive online learning games. \n\nEver wonder how AI will affect space? Students will use interactive AI software to train their very own machine learning model to identify different objects in outer space!\nInterested in learning more about energy generation on the moon? Join us for a 3D modeling activity on Tinkercad to create a solution together.\nWant to learn more about space? Launch into our Kahoot trivia session where your knowledge will be put to the test!\n\nThe event is hosted in partnership with Ontario Tech University\, Engineers of Tomorrow\, and Engineers Canada.  \nThe event will feature special keynote speaker (Canadian Space Agency Astronaut Joshua Kutryk) and include accessible resources for students and educators to continue STEM learning after the event.

SUMMARY:ISPE & EoT present: How do we improve diversity in STEM professions? Talk to kids about it!
DESCRIPTION:This event is available to ISPE members.\nWhy is this diversity conversation important? Given our goal to effectively attract and retain diverse and talented individuals\, we would like to know how to do it. We can trust in the science – in this case social psychology. Put into practice what has been discovered in scientific research. As engineers & STEM professionals\, this is something we do everyday. \nEngineering and technology professions will benefit from a more diverse perspective make-up. We’ll be able to solve more complex problems. We will be better able to serve society when we reflect it. Adding equality and access to opportunity as fairness/justice AND an imperative for success for engineers and their mandate. \nAgenda: \n\nDiversity in engineering: where are we now?\nInsights – what does the research tell us?\nDiscussion – what’s your experience?\nInterventions & best practices you can use.\n\nContact Amanat Kaur for more information & to register. SUMMARY:TCDSB Family STEAM night
DESCRIPTION:Toronto Catholic District School Board families are invited to join Engineers of Tomorrow & Spin Master to experience engineering in a unique and interactive way! \nEvent will be lead by Spin Master engineer\, Kat Turner! \n \nHi! My name is Kat Turner and I’m a mechanical engineer at Spin Master. As an engineer I help create ways for toys to move\, drive\, interact with and respond to you. I design mechanism for the movements on my computer and then 3D print them into real life. My favourite thing about my job is being able to take things apart\, figure out how they work and put them back together in a way that is even better than before. I get to have a lot of fun every day. \nBefore I worked at Spin Master\, I had another interesting job as an aerospace engineer. My job was to modify aircraft to allow them to perform special tasks\, such as a fire-fighting water bomber.   I worked in a large hanger and spent often had to climb all around an aircraft. Have you ever climbed on top of an airplane?  As an aerospace engineer I have! \n

SUMMARY:WinSETT community event: Telling YOUR SETT Story
DESCRIPTION:Join us for this free event —> RSVP\nThis month (very fitting to honour the end of National Engineering Month)\, we are going to speak with Rebecca White\, who is a chemical engineering grad whose story in engineering started WAY before her first year of study! \nIn fact\, Rebecca (now the CEO of the national non-profit organization Engineers of Tomorrow) believes that EVERYONE in a SETT career has their own story\, and that it’s worth telling. Erica will chat with her all about it and ask just what a ‘SETT story’ is… \nAccording to Rebecca\, telling your own SETT story can lead to: \n– more confidence and focus on what really matters to you in your career \n– the ability to ‘connect the dots’ between the work your company is doing and the biggest problems that matter to people \n– a chance to ‘pay it forward’ to ensure others have great opportunities in the future \nRebecca will offer some insights from her own story as well as some tips you can implement right away to illuminate your own SETT story\, and an invitation to practice in your community if you so choose! It’s going to be a fabulous conversation\, full of (free) positive energy and inspiration. \nWe hope to see you for this free community event! It’s a chance to connect with some of your fellow women in STEM and trades\, as well as some of our awesome allies\, reflect on our shared experiences\, and give each other a little well-deserved encouragement and support. You’ll be so glad you did!
